Building Attendant

Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Healthy Living, the Building Attendant is responsible for total building security and cleanliness and building member relations. The Building Attendant shall perform all YMCA duties in accordance with the policies, procedures and standards established by the YMCA of West Central Illinois association.

Qualifications

  • Confident in working with and around people

  • Willing to keep a SAFE YMCA and be knowledgeable in all Y rules and programs.

  • Building Attendant must be knowledgeable in all Fitness Center and programs in order to accurately answer questions and promote YMCA fitness and its programs.

  • Must support the mission and values of the YMCA.

  • The nature of this position requires medium physical efforts such as setting up equipment and lifting weights.

  • Adhere completely to the YMCA Fitness Center Dress Code in order to keep a professional appearance. This includes always wearing staff name tag, YMCA staff shirt and appropriate pants.

  • Be able to read and write.

  • Be able to lift at least 25 pounds.

  • Be able to relate effectively to a diverse group of people.

  • Be able to stoop, bend and stretch when performing responsibilities.

  • Be able to use sound judgments.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for introducing self to unknown faces and create an atmosphere of friendly community.

  • Responsible for logging duties performed during shift.

  • Communicate members needs to the Director of Healthy Living.

  • Conduct adult equipment orientation that include demonstration of fitness equipment.

  • Complete assignments in accordance with cleaning/maintenance plan.

  • Report any equipment or facility concerns to the Director of Healthy Living and Maintenance Director.

  • Keep free weight areas safe and organized.

  • Must be able to demonstrate proper form and function when orienting members to the fitness equipment.

  • Responsible for making sure members follow all rules/guidelines while in the facility.

  • Responds quickly and appropriately to emergency situations. Reads, knows, follows, and enforces emergency procedures, YMCA policies, rules, applicable to the facility.

  • Is responsible for all scheduled hours and if necessary, follows the appropriate substitution procedures.

  • Keep socialization with other personnel to a minimum. Since the job expectation is to interact with members at all times. Cell phone use and texting is not appropriate while on shift at the Y.

  • Observes and reports on what’s going on in the building during each shift. Completes Building Attendant Shift Report during every shift as well as fitness cleaning list. Documents any and all incidents or accidents properly and legibly using the Accident or Incident Forms. Forms are given to Director of Healthy Living. Completes all paperwork accurately.

  • Engages with members and makes certain that they always feel safe.

  • Attends staff meetings and trainings as required.

  • Responds to member concerns.

  • Ensures the washing, drying, and stocking of towels for member use in locker rooms and at Welcome Desk. Other duties may include custodial responsibilities in the absence of janitorial staff (i.e., clean ups, refilling soap, shoveling, and salting for ice and snow, etc.)

  • Conducts superior tours for prospective members and promotes the YMCA in a positive manner whenever possible, always supporting our YMCA Mission and Values.

  • Reports any facility/maintenance issues to Maintenance Director in a timely manner. Major or emergency facility issues should be reported to Maintenance Director or another director immediately.

  • Ensures that the overall building is clean by the end of the shift.
