Summer Camp Tween Coordinator
Position Summary
Under the direction and supervision of the Director of Youth and Family Development, the incumbent is responsible for assisting with all aspects of the summer camp program, supervision of children, and day-to-day operation of the Tween group. Responsible for each camper's social, physical, and mental health and safety. Responsible for programming a stimulating and safe environment for children in the program. This responsibility demands enthusiasm, humor, patience, energy, maturity, focus, and creativity on a continuous basis in order to lead effectively.
Qualifications
Understands the YMCA mission and Character Development Values.
Knowledge of children and their behavior and a genuine desire to work with them
Experience working with children
Ability to build positive relationship/communication skills with adults and children
Certifications: CPR and First Aid within 30 days of hire.
Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills.
Be at least 17 yrs. of age.
Strong communication and judgment skills.
Bring to this position maturity, responsibility and a sincere interest in working with families.
Knowledge of YMCA rules, regulations and policies.
Possess knowledge of age appropriate activities and expectations of chidden ages 6 – 12 years.
Be able to sit, stand and bend to perform appropriate tasks
Be able to lift at least 25 pounds
Must be able to move at an appropriate pace to respond in emergency situations
Ability to move around the room to assist children and supervise them with daily activities, social interaction, physical and emotional needs
Ability to interact and participate in gross motor activities with the children
Essential Functions and Expectations
Understand the concepts of mutual respect, caring, honesty and responsibility in positive communications and interaction with children, parents and staff.
Attend camp orientation and training.
Responsible for an assigned group of children.
Guide and assist in development of camp program content and special events.
Provide Camp Director with list of supplies needed for each week and manage all program supplies to run a quality program.
Prepare needed materials and supplies for each day’s activities before the start of day.
Communicate problems, issues or concerns with the supervisor.
Ensure and maintain confidentiality of family, children and staff.
Actively participate in all program activities and special events.
Responsible for ensuring diverse program experiences for children each day.
Positive verbal and non-verbal communication with children to build trusting and stable relationships.
Utilize solid judgment and discretionary skills as well as make independent decisions that will affect the YMCA.
Assist site director in keeping up-to-date records on all children participating in the program.
Substitute in any camp area with flexibility and a positive attitude.
Demonstrate teamwork through personal interaction amongst all staff.
Ensure the safety of all children and know where children are at all times.
Provide opportunities to build self-help and independence skills.
Manage hygiene requirements of the children.
Ensure all children’s individual needs are met with dignity and respect.
Care for program equipment and check daily for safety.
Monitor Indoor and outdoor space for health and safety concerns. Maintain an environment that ensures children’s safety and well being.
Report all repairs, incidents, and accidents to the Camp Director and/or Program Director. Reports made on appropriate forms and within the required time frame.
Keep the program site clean and sanitary to insure health and safety of all children.
Keep a neat and clean appearance, in accordance with the standards set by the YMCA. Wear name tags, staff shirts, and black or tan shorts while on duty.
Responsible for all aspects of quality customer service-including greeting parents, handling parent questions and concerns and staying informed of programs.
Serve as a relationship builder for site staff and families enhancing their commitment to the YMCA members and the mission.
Keep current on any new program activities or special events to assist and enhance the programs.
Follow general direction and perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Youth and Family Development.
Ensure YMCA policies and guidelines are followed at all times.
Model, practice, and carry out the YMCA Values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
Plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities that advance all areas of children’s development and learning, including social, emotional, intellectual and physical competence.
Conduct the program in accordance with YMCA goals and principles of developmentally appropriate practices.
